Choose and use accommodation carefully
Choose by operations as well as comfort. A recognizable luxury brand may have good systems, but the actual property, staff practices, access points and event exposure matter.
Questions before booking
Who staffs the entrance at night? How are visitors and replacement keys verified? Can the hotel avoid announcing your room number and confirming your presence to callers? Is there accessible emergency egress? Who manages security incidents and medical assistance?
For a rental or villa, verify the property, host and booking channel, how access codes are changed, whether previous guests retain access and how help reaches the property. Isolation and privacy can reduce the speed at which help arrives. Review these tradeoffs with your protection adviser if exposure is elevated.
On arrival
- Confirm the booking and any payment changes through the official front desk or booking channel, especially if messages request a new payment link.
- Learn the exits and building emergency instructions. Ask how an evacuation works for anyone with mobility or medical needs.
- Check that the room's ordinary locking arrangements work and report faults. Do not add devices that compromise emergency access or escape.
- Avoid discussing holdings, signing arrangements or the full itinerary with staff, drivers or people nearby.
- Keep necessary identification accessible in accordance with local law, and store other valuables appropriately.
During the stay
Verify unexpected staff visits with the front desk using a known number before opening, when safe. Do not admit an unfamiliar guest to your room for an investment presentation, technical repair or wallet demonstration. Use an appropriate staffed meeting area and keep your own transport arrangements.
A hotel safe is a limited protection for possessions; it is not a suitable reason to travel with reserve recovery material. Do not leave signing devices or sensitive documents exposed. If a device has been outside your control, have it assessed before restoring sensitive access.
If something feels wrong
Ask hotel security for help, change arrangements if needed and involve police when there is a threat. Preserve evidence without confronting anyone. If you discover a possible camera in a private area, avoid handling it, move to a safe location and report the concern. Consumer detection gadgets cannot establish that a room is free of surveillance.
At checkout: check the room and safe, collect documents and devices, remove temporary permissions, and avoid revealing the next destination to unnecessary people. Notify your trusted contact of meaningful itinerary changes.
